Preparing singers for careers in music

Tip of the month

A big thank you to students and parents for listening to the Tip of the Month from April (Tip 2).  I have been very pleased with the positive attitude and supportive comments that I have heard from people at contests and performances lately.  I have heard compliments and encouragements for other competitors, finding something nice to say to someone discouraged by a poor performance, and the one I am most pleased to hear—”oh, well, it happens” when the judging does not go our way.  I have also been pleased with people trying to find an appropriate way to express constructive criticisms for fellow students.  That’s a hard one.

With constructive criticisms, usually, not saying anything is best, unless the person asks you for advice.  Another option is to tell me what you think in private and we can try to work something out that is tactful and helpful.

I know we have been trying.  There is still more room for improvement (I include myself in this!), but overall I think we are doing well.

One thing that has been helping me is that I have quit judging the contest in my head or on paper.  Then I don’t really remember how well the others did compared to the person I’m rooting for.  Then I don’t get upset by the results as much.  I try to listen carefully to all my students so I can give them compliments and constructive criticisms in their lessons, since that’s my job, but I try to only look for the positive in others.

I am proud of you!  Thank you for the privilege of working with you!  You guys are great!
